Dear Friends and Fellow Bakers,

Welcome to the Great Pumpkin month and all the great pumpkin baking that goes with it!

I don’t know why it is but I totally adore pumpkins, both as part of my house décor and in so much of my baking. As for the former, each year, around mid-September through to the end of October, I collect both real pumpkins (I love the new white ones) and whatever interesting crafty pumpkins I can find at Home Sense, Pier 1 or Etsy. I so enjoy creating pumpkin-esque environments. In addition, I strategically place pumpkin candles (along with vanilla, cinnamon, and incredible Pumpkin Peach from www.GoldCanyon.com) all through my home and pumpkin pie tea is always on the boil. In a phrase: fall is good – and October is one of my favorite months in all ways. It’s just rife with hospitality and a sense of cozying up which makes it perfect for baking.

I don’t know about you but September disappears in the holidays as well as back-to-school, back-to-life scheduling. The balmy weather around here also makes me feel it’s still summer but there’s the autumn schedule one has to tend to. As warm as it may be, there are still leaves to rake and house-y things to deal with as the seasons change, no matter how warm the temperatures.

Seasonally, my appetite also changes and I want homey baking as well as tons of soups and lots of spice, both sweet and savory. On a random but nice food note, I’ve just discovered, as a thyroid person (those who have it get it) that one of the foods I should avoid is kale! And here it is, October lst, National Kale Day!  From now on, I’ll be using spinach whenever recipes call for kale. (Does anyone remember that once kale was used just to decorate salad bars? Who knew it was edible? Ok – I jest. I like kale fair enough but it’s nice to know I can now avoid it if I choose to).
