The Pastry Chef's or Krispie Kreme Diet
How come you are so slim ? is what most pastry chefs want to hear. How I manage that is based on another one of my own creations (and it's not a cookie), the most sane diet I know and the only one that works!
"If you are a pastry chef, how come you're so slim?" is a phrase that is music to my ears and one that helps keep me slim for I am always aware of the drawbacks of my profession. You know that old Playboy cartoon where in the hugest stripper in the tiniest g-string in the world jumps out of a cake at a bachelor party? Gazing in shock, the caption reads (one bachelor turns to the other), "Omigod, she's been nibbling on the cake from the inside!" Well, that was my greatest fear, that I would become, and did indeed venture near being, a walking poster child for my own profession.
Like restaurant reviewers, you want to talk about food and earn you living from your passion for it, but not being a physical incarnation of all the calories you couldn't avoid. It is so stereo-typical besides (check out the famed Norman Rockwell portrait of a chef, sitting on a stool, surrounding by goodies, reading a book called Diet).
So a few years ago, I decided to treat myself objectively; more as a science experiement, void of raproach and admonishments but more as an objective observer of what would work and what didn't.
The entire feature The Pastry Chef's or Krispie Kreme Diet is now in the manuscript of Love, Bread and Tango, an upcoming novel by Marcy Goldman. We will keep you posted.
